Mission accomplished

Well we’re back home now and I’m happy to report that it all went fairly smoothly. :)

Jonathan was scheduled second on the afternoon list of operations, which meant that we only went in with him at 16h00.

By that time we’d been starving the poor little fellow for 6.5 hours but he was very good about it. Even had a two hour midday nap, didn’t cry after he woke up again and was smiling at us right up until they put the gas mask on his face.

Tom and I had two hours to kill after they hurried us out of the anaesthetic room (and we were urged out very smartly indeed). We went along to the gorgeous St Christopher’s chapel that is part of the hospital and then moseyed back to the ward to wait for our call.

Jon was not a very happy camper when we took over holding him in Recovery at 18h00.

As part of his nose job, the surgeon had put a plug of foam into the affected nostril which made breathing quite hard when combined with general mucous-heavy congestion from crying.

But once we’d got him back to the Peter Pan ward and got 200ml of milk into him (using a special squeezy bottle because breast feeding appeared to be too painful), he was much more calm and reasonable.

This morning, under the influence of pain-killers, he was breast-feeding once more, and even smiling at us. We were able to bring him home before lunchtime — armed with antibiotics and two varieties of infant pain relief.

All that remains then, is the removal of his stitches next week and about 18 months for the scar to consolidate into its final form. Big sighs of relief all round! :)

Some further pics here if you aren’t squeamish and want to see more gory details.

Why did Jon need to have his nose stitched? It looked fine before? Or does including his nose in the operation help with the cleft lip in some way?
Poor little guy doesn’t look like he enjoyed the op. I’m glad that they make pain-killers in infant portions.

If you look closely at this pic, you’ll see that Jon’s left nostril is slightly flattened — not so obvious while it’s still so cute and tiny :) — this was caused by the cleft. So as part of the operation, they pulled in the cartilage on that side to make his nose symmetrical.

We’re hoping he’ll thank us for it when he’s 16 ’cause he’s still super pissed-off about that nose plug right now! ;-)

We could all learn a lot from his approach to life and troubles – what a little tough guy. I never imagined you would be able to breastfeed him so soon – hats off to both of you :-)

Thanks! :) And I agree, he really has been Mom and Dad’s little hero throughout all this. I’ve been watching him closely today to see if he needed any pain-killers, and he’s seemed absolutely fine without them all day – quite amazing.
