First birthday picnic

Saturday, 12th July 2008 by Julie

Jonathan’s first birthday party was a fairly low-key affair. Just a casual picnic in the park with us and some friends with their own little people.

When his big day rolled around, our lad was slightly subdued and not his normal happy self. We put this down to a curious little virus that was whipping round the local infant community. It didn’t have any serious effects, but did dampen his healthy appetite, cover his torso with little red spots, and made him a lot more solemn than usual.

Nevertheless, he was still able to enjoy his presents (and their boxes!) and prove that he had ample appetite for sticky chocolate birthday cake when his turn came around! :P

(Additional pictures from his birthday and our holiday are in this album.)

    Hi

Stumbled across your blog, I was quite impressed by the way you did your photos – what application are you using? Looks great with the borders and torn corners etc.
    Thanks

    Hi there

Glad you like the photo effects. :) I mainly use the free Gimp software these days – it has a nifty effect called “Fuzzy Border” which I utilise quite a lot, as well as various others like Drop Shadow and Add Border which I use in combination to get various other looks for the borders. Gimp is a lot like PhotoShop — it takes some getting used to but it delivers some great results if you’re prepared to play around.

A great little (free) graphics app which I started off with is FastStone Image Viewer. It has a number of Frame effects which can be added to photos very quickly to give interesting borders. It also does a brilliant Red Eye fix and many other bits and pieces. Not as powerful as Gimp but very quick to get started with and highly recommended.
